Past perfect and past simple

1. STRUCTURE & USE

  • PAST SIMPLE: acción que ocurre después
    • (+) Affirmative: SUBJECT + PAST SIMPLE VERB (V-ED/IRREGULAR) + COM.
    • (-) Negative: SUBJECT + DIDN’T + VERB + COM.
    • (?) Interrogative: DID + SUBJECT + V + COM. ?
      • Yes, SUBJECT DID
      • No, SUBJECT DIDN’T
  • PAST PERFECT: acción que ocurre antes
    • (+) Affirmative: SUBJECT + HAD + PAST PARTICIPLE VERB (V-ED/IRREGULAR) + COM.

2. TIME EXPRESSIONS

  • BY THE TIME (mientras, para cuando)
    • PAST PERFECT + By the time + PAST SIMPLE:

      • Ex: By the time police arrived, the thieves had already gone.
  • BEFORE (antes)
    • PAST PERFECT + Before + PAST SIMPLE:
      • Ex: Rebecca’s ship had broken down before it caught fire.
    • Before + PAST SIMPLE, PAST PERFECT:
      • Ex: Before Rebecca’s ship caught fire, it had broken down.
  • AFTER (después)

Subject and object questions

  • Object questions: WH (who/what) + auxiliary + verb + subject?
